NRCC Dunbar YB & OH Section Winners

The NRCC’s final two calendared races took place on Saturday, September 14th from Dunbar. The young birds were the first to be liberated at 8:15 followed by the old hens at 8:55. The wind was a strong South Westerly one for much of the Northern part of the country although it eased in strength down towards the more Southerly areas of the country. Despite clearing well at the race point it proved to be a difficult race for many a member with some pigeons taking longer than expected to find a line home however, following on from the fantastic open wins of Dave and Pat Evans taking the top positions in both the Old Hens and Young Birds races I am now able to bring you the section winners reports. Congratulations has to go to Teddy Gunn from Section I winning both the old hens and young birds race with his brilliant team of distance pigeons. Congratulations also to all of the other section winners whether they are seasoned NRCC members or first timers, it is with much appreciation and thanks on my part to you for sending me in your photos and section winner details.

Firstly, my congratulations to the winners of the race and other sections. This winning pigeon has also had two club and Federation section wins with the Peterborough and District Federation. GB24S15201 has been sent to every club race prior to this race and was raced to the perch, unseparated. He was put on darkness from March to June.  Just to blow a lot of theories out of the water, this year’s batch of youngsters would not fly and were very nearly not raced. They came out of the loft, sat on the top and wouldn’t move. Frightened up they went on the house roof and when frightened off there, they went back on the loft. In the end I decided to basket them and train. I started with two tosses from across the field, 500 yards, then took them 5 miles, 10 miles and 30 miles a few times. They have freedom twice a day but still do not exercise. After the first race they have not been in the training basket. This particular bird, a Blue Chequer cock is bred out of two gift birds from David Hicks, Norfolk. I think he will go on to score as a yearling.  Thank you, David.

Section F: T and N Hart flying a distance of 285/188 with a velocity of 1220.

Trevor Hart

This hen was bred by my son Lee for me and my other son Brett to race. It’s bred from a pair of direct P and D stud Van den Bulck lines. The sire is a son of Blaauw Connondale x Golden Special and the dam was from Golden Boy x Vaal Leo. This pair breed winners out of turn including another section winner in the strong Peterborough fed. My son Brett took charge of the young birds this year and showed some great potential preparing the birds for racing and taking some good positions in club and federation but we really wanted to do well in the NRCC Dunbar young bird national. This hen went to all young bird races up to two weeks before the Dunbar race when she was then stopped and given one 50 mile toss three days before the race. She was also sent sitting 5 days on eggs.

Section H: G Chalkley and Son flying a distance of 324/1537 with a velocity of 990.

George and Steve Chalkley

No strangers to distance racing with the NRCC, the brilliant lofts of George and Steve Chalkley strike again taking the top position in Section H. Earlier in the year, George and Steve gifted two babies to the super flying lofts of three times Tommy Long cup winners, John and Richard Turnell, who, in return bred and gifted two back. It was one of the Turnell’s gifted birds that did the business for George and Steve on the day.

Section I: T Gunn flying a distance of 332/1069 with a velocity of 936.

Teddy Gunn

My section winning YB is a chequer hen she is a daughter of 1st LNRC Sedgefield x 1st section BICC falsies and 16th open BICC O/H Guernsey. She is raced as a natural young bird on 8 days e

OH

Section A: J Parker flying a distance of 212/646 with a velocity of 939.

This hen was sent sitting 8 days. Her lineage is a blend of Galaxy lofts, Bill Bearder & Sons, C Dolan and B & J Beresford birds. Her last race was on the 7th July from Darlington. My birds are all natural pigeons and have to race without exception. They are then paired best to best that have done well racing and especially at distance, merited on my own points system. Feeding is day to day Breed and Race mixture with tic beans added and a day before basketing. On basketing day, they are fed Versa Laga Gerry plus mixture. She was trained on a trainer 6 times to Barnsley 40 miles before the race. It was a very tough race for us in this part of the Midlands with that very strong West Wind and congratulations to Mr & Mrs D Evans on their terrific team of pigeons who have certainly mastered this race plus the convoyers & NRCC management team including our press officer who do a terrific job in promoting the NRCC.

Section B: D & J Swift flying a distance of 226/622with a velocity of 1037

Section F: C Leak & Mrs D King flying a distance of 268/1706with a velocity of 1088

Section I: T Gunn flying a distance of 332/1069 with a velocity of 1050. My old hen is a daughter of 1st LNRC Whitley bay and she was also 1st section last year.
